Social Norms

Shared, informally enforced expectations about how members of a group ought to behave — sustained not by a central authority but by mutual observation, reputation, and the threat of decentralized sanction (e.g. exclusion of defectors). In multi-agent settings, norms such as “cooperate with those who help others” can emerge from repeated interaction and reputational signalling rather than being imposed, which is the mechanism by which Indirect Reciprocity and gossip-based reputation stabilise cooperation among LLM Agents.
