Social Dilemma

A strategic situation in which individually rational choices produce a collectively worse outcome than mutual cooperation would — the tension between self-interest and group welfare. Canonical instances include the Prisoner’s Dilemma, the public-goods game, and the tragedy of the commons; the defining feature is that defection dominates for each player yet universal defection is Pareto-inferior. Social dilemmas are the testbed for studying when and how Reciprocity, reputation, and Indirect Reciprocity can sustain cooperation, including among LLM Agents.
