Common Knowledge

A group reaches common knowledge of φ when everyone knows φ, everyone knows that everyone knows φ, and so on to infinity (C_G φ). It is the epistemic precondition for coordinated simultaneous action, and the classic result of Halpern & Moses is that common knowledge cannot be attained in a system where communication is not guaranteed (the Coordinated Attack problem) — each message leaves a residual layer of uncertainty. Common knowledge is the strongest standard group-knowledge operator, above “everyone knows” and Distributed Knowledge.
