Embodiment

The thesis (Brooks, Varela, Clark) that intelligent behaviour requires — or at least is best understood as — situated, physical interaction with the world rather than disembodied symbol manipulation. Closely associated with behaviour-based robotics, the Brooks claim that “the world is its own best model,” and the extended-mind hypothesis of Clark & Chalmers. The opposing position is the strong-symbolic-AI view that intelligence is in principle separable from any particular physical realisation.
