McCulloch-Pitts Neuron

The 1943 threshold-logic unit: a binary element that “fires” (outputs 1) when the weighted sum of its inputs meets a threshold, otherwise outputs 0. Networks of such units can compute any Boolean function, which is why von Neumann adopts it as the basic organ whose unreliable behaviour his reliability construction must tolerate. Also the historical seed of artificial neural networks.
