Sense-Plan-Act

The dominant pre-1986 robotics control paradigm: a serial pipeline through perception (“sense”), world-model construction and symbolic planning (“plan”), and motor control (“act”). Brooks’s subsumption architecture (1986) was an explicit rejection of this organisation in favour of decomposition by behavioural competence — concurrent sense-act loops with no central planner.
