Quine-Duhem Thesis

The claim that hypotheses cannot be tested in isolation: any prediction follows only from a theory together with a web of auxiliary assumptions, so a failed prediction never falsifies a single statement — one can always preserve a hypothesis by revising something else (“no statement is immune to revision”). Underwrites Quine’s Confirmation Holism and, with the collapse of the Analytic-Synthetic Distinction, his Semantic Holism.
