NetBill Protocol

An e-commerce payment protocol (Sirbu, IEEE Spectrum 1997) in which a customer requests a quote, the merchant delivers (encrypted) goods after acceptance, the customer sends an electronic payment order, and the merchant returns a receipt that contains the decryption key. Used as the canonical worked example in Yolum & Singh’s commitment-based protocol-specification papers because its conditional payment-for-key structure exhibits the opportunities and exceptions that finite-state-machine protocol models cannot accommodate flexibly.
