Indirect Reciprocity

A mechanism for the evolution of cooperation (Nowak & Sigmund) in which an agent helps those who have a reputation for helping others, rather than only those who helped it directly (direct Reciprocity / Tit-for-Tat). Cooperation is repaid by third parties via reputation rather than by the original beneficiary — “I help you, someone else helps me” — which requires a way to observe and transmit reputational information, classically through gossip or a shared score. It is the social principle behind language-mediated reputation among LLM Agents in ALIGN.
