Dynamic Semantics

A family of semantic theories on which meaning is the potential to change the conversational state, not a static mapping to truth values — the program of which Update Semantics is the canonical instance. Meaning is procedural: interpreting a sentence does something to the Common Ground. Stalnaker’s account of assertion is an early and influential motivation; the approach later underwrites treatments of anaphora, presupposition, and modality.
