Conversational Commitment

A meta-level commitment — sketched by Fornara & Colombetti and developed in Traum & Allen’s discourse-obligations work — that every agent makes when it agrees to take part in an interaction: the obligation to react in some way to the speech acts addressed to it. Conversational commitments justify structural features such as the time-out on a precommitment (the speaker is owed some reaction within bounded time) and underwrite soundness conditions for negotiation protocols.
