Accommodation

The pragmatic process (Lewis 1979, used by Stalnaker) whereby the conversational Common Ground is silently adjusted to make a speaker’s move acceptable. When an utterance presupposes something not yet shared, hearers typically accommodate by adding the presupposition to the common ground rather than objecting — a key mechanism by which context updates and presupposition actually work in dialogue.
